Karura Forest Nairobi: Urban Forest Hiking, Waterfalls & Weekend Escape Guide

Karura Forest is one of Nairobi's most extraordinary assets — a 1,000-acre indigenous forest reserve in the heart of the city that offers hiking trails, mountain bike routes, picnic spots by waterfall pools, and genuine wildlife encounters just 10 minutes from the central business district. In a city often characterised by traffic and concrete sprawl, Karura is a remarkable green sanctuary, and its very existence is a testament to the persistence of community activists — led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai — who fought for years to prevent the forest's conversion to private development.

The forest's trail network covers over 30km of well-maintained paths through indigenous trees, riparian gallery forest along the Karura River, and open glades where Colobus monkeys can frequently be seen in the canopy. The two waterfalls — Cave Waterfall and Mau Mau Cave Waterfall, the latter set in a dramatic cave once used as a hideout during the colonial-era Mau Mau uprising — are the most popular destinations within the forest, easily reached on a 2–3km return walk from the main gate. The cave's history adds a layer of political significance to what is otherwise a beautiful nature walk.

Karura has become one of Nairobi's most popular weekend activities for residents of all backgrounds — families with children, serious trail runners, mountain bikers, birders (over 200 species recorded), and people simply seeking a few hours away from the city's noise. The forest is managed by the Friends of Karura Forest community organisation; entry fees (around KES 600 for non-residents) go directly to maintenance and conservation. The main Limuru Road gate is the most accessible entry point, approximately 15 minutes from the city centre by Bolt or Little Cab.
