Nairobi 3-Day Itinerary: The Perfect Long Weekend in East Africa

Nairobi is the only capital city in the world with a national park on its doorstep, and on day one that distinction should define your visit. Nairobi National Park begins just seven kilometres from the city centre and is home to lions, rhinos, giraffes, buffalo, and hundreds of bird species against a backdrop of downtown skyscrapers — one of the most surreal and wonderful wildlife experiences anywhere on earth. Take a morning game drive, ideally at dawn when the animals are most active, then visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage next to the park's main gate, where rescued elephant calves and rhinos are bottle-fed by keepers in one of the most moving conservation experiences in Africa.

Day two belongs to Karen and the Langata suburbs. The Karen Blixen Museum at the former home of the Out of Africa author offers a beautifully preserved window into colonial-era Kenya, with the Ngong Hills visible in the background exactly as Blixen described them. The Giraffe Centre nearby allows visitors to feed Rothschild giraffes — an endangered species — from a raised wooden platform at eye level. In the afternoon, explore the Kazuri Beads workshop and fair trade enterprise in Karen, then drive to the Carnivore restaurant on Langata Road for a dinner of traditional nyama choma — grilled meat — in one of Nairobi's most beloved institutions.

On day three, head into the city proper. The Nairobi National Museum holds the finest collection of Kenyan natural history, pre-history, and cultural heritage in the country, including fossils of human ancestors discovered in the Rift Valley. The adjacent Snake Park and botanical garden are free with museum entry. In the afternoon, explore the Westlands and Gigiri neighbourhoods, where the United Nations compound anchors an international district of excellent restaurants, craft markets, and coffee shops that reflect Nairobi's status as East Africa's diplomatic and business hub. End the evening at a rooftop bar in Westlands watching sunset over the Ngong Hills — a view that reminds you that despite its traffic and hustle, Nairobi remains one of Africa's most extraordinary cities.
