Carnivore Restaurant Nairobi: The African Game Meat Experience

The Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi's Langata suburb is one of the most famous restaurants in Africa — a theatrical dining experience built around large cast-iron Maasai swords used as skewers for roasting an extraordinary variety of meats over a giant charcoal pit, served to diners at communal tables in an endless rotation until the iconic white flag of surrender is raised. The restaurant opened in 1980 and has been a fixture of Nairobi's dining scene for more than four decades, attracting both international visitors who have read about it in every guidebook and local Nairobians who treat it as the destination for celebrations and special occasions.

The Carnivore's original menu included game meats — zebra, wildebeest, crocodile, and ostrich alongside the conventional beef, pork, and lamb — though wildlife conservation laws have modified the menu in recent years to focus primarily on farmed exotic meats rather than wild game. Ostrich, crocodile, and camel are still regularly available alongside the conventional meats, and the restaurant's theatrical presentation of the swords bearing their sizzling cargo remains unchanged from the original concept. The all-you-can-eat format includes unlimited sides — roasted corn, salads, baked beans, and various sauces — with the meat arriving in continuous waves until diners signal contentment or defeat.

The Carnivore's grounds also house the Simba Saloon bar and entertainment venue, where the restaurant's evening customers transition to dancing and live music after dinner, making the complex a full evening's entertainment rather than simply a restaurant. The venue is best visited in a group that can embrace the theatrical communal nature of the experience — the long communal tables, the ritual of raising the white flag, and the competitive carnivore culture the restaurant encourages create a social dynamic that works best with several people who can sustain the conversation and competitive spirit through several hours of eating. The restaurant is a 20-minute drive from Nairobi city centre and most easily reached by taxi or ride-sharing app.
