Nairobi Craft Beer Guide: Kenya's Growing Microbrewery Scene

Kenya's craft beer revolution is centred on Nairobi, where a generation of entrepreneurs trained in American and European brewing traditions have established microbreweries that challenge the Tusker and White Cap duopoly that has dominated Kenyan drinking culture for decades. The scene is young but growing with the confidence that comes from excellent source water, a reliable agricultural supply chain, and an increasingly sophisticated drinking public.

The Brew Bistro chain pioneered the craft beer concept in Nairobi's entertainment districts, establishing multiple venues with in-house brewing operations in Westlands, the CBD, and Garden City that collectively introduced hundreds of thousands of Nairobians to hop-forward ales, wheat beers, and craft lagers. Big Five Breweries in the industrial area produces canned craft beer for retail distribution, making Kenyan craft beer accessible beyond the gastropub setting for the first time.

Craft beer bars concentrate in Westlands (the most cosmopolitan entertainment district), Kilimani, and the Karen suburb, where the expat community and returning diaspora have created the core market. The Nairobi Craft Beer Festival, held annually, brings together local producers and international imports in a celebration that has grown each year since its founding — the best single event for assessing where Kenyan craft beer stands in any given year.
