Karen Blixen Museum Nairobi: Out of Africa & Karen Suburb Guide

The Karen Blixen Museum occupies the farmhouse where the Danish author lived from 1914 to 1931 and which she immortalised in her memoir "Out of Africa" — one of the 20th century's most celebrated accounts of East African life, later adapted into an Academy Award-winning film. The house and its surrounding gardens in the Karen suburb of Nairobi offer a remarkably intact window into the world of Kenya's early European settler community and the complex relationship between colonial settlers and the African landscape and peoples they encountered.

The farmhouse has been preserved with remarkable care, with many original furnishings, books, and personal effects remaining in place to give visitors a genuine sense of the household as it functioned during Blixen's years on the farm. The surrounding coffee plantation, though no longer producing coffee, retains its mature trees and the sense of the agricultural enterprise that sustained the farm during much of Blixen's tenure despite considerable financial difficulties.

The Karen suburb itself is one of Nairobi's most pleasant and distinctive residential areas — spacious, green, and dotted with excellent restaurants, boutique shops, and some of the city's finest craft and art galleries. The proximity of the Blixen Museum to the Giraffe Centre and Nairobi National Park makes the Karen area an excellent base for an entire day of wildlife and cultural experiences without travelling far from the city's comfortable southern suburbs.
