Karen Nairobi: The Green Suburb Guide for Restaurants, Nature & Local Life

Karen is Nairobi's most serene and beautiful suburb — a leafy, low-density residential area in the southwest of the city named after the Danish author Karen Blixen (pen name Isak Dinesen), whose colonial-era farm here inspired her memoir Out of Africa. With wide roads bordered by jacaranda trees, large private plots, equestrian properties, and the Ngong Hills rising on the horizon, Karen feels like a different world from central Nairobi, yet it is increasingly home to some of the city's best restaurants, wellness centres, and boutique shopping.

The Karen Blixen Museum — the restored farmhouse where Blixen lived from 1917 to 1931 — is the neighbourhood's most visited site, preserved with period furniture, personal photographs, and the backdrop of the Ngong Hills exactly as described in Out of Africa. The nearby Giraffe Centre (already covered elsewhere) and David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust elephant orphanage make Karen the centre of Nairobi's wildlife tourism ecosystem. The Ngong Racecourse on the neighbourhood's edge hosts race meetings that are beloved social events for Nairobi's establishment.

Karen's restaurant and shopping scene has grown significantly, concentrated around the Karen Shopping Centre and the surrounding streets. Several of Nairobi's best restaurants are in Karen — they benefit from the calmer environment, larger premises, and clientele that appreciates quality. The neighbourhood's Horseman Restaurant, a Karen institution for decades, serves consistently excellent food in a converted colonial house setting. For shopping, the Karen Curio Market is one of the better-curated craft markets in Nairobi, with a focus on Kenyan-made jewellery, sculpture, and textile work. Karen is accessible by Bolt/Little Cab; the journey from the CBD takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic.
