Nairobi Masai Market Guide: Best Authentic African Craft Shopping

The Masai Market is Nairobi's most vibrant and authentic open-air craft market — a rotating weekly market where Maasai and other Kenyan artisans sell hand-crafted jewellery, beadwork, wood carvings, textiles, leather goods, and curios. Unlike airport souvenir shops, the Masai Market is where local craftspeople sell directly to buyers at negotiable prices. The market moves locations: Tuesday at the Village Market in Gigiri (near embassies), Friday at the Yaya Centre in Hurlingham, and Saturday at the Capital Centre on Mombasa Road. The Village Market location is the largest and most accessible, with over 300 stalls spread across an outdoor courtyard. Bargaining is expected — start at about 40% of the first price offered and negotiate from there. Arrive early (before noon) for the best selection. Look for authentic Maasai beaded jewellery, Kikoy fabrics, Kisii soapstone carvings, and hand-stitched leather sandals — uniquely Kenyan pieces unavailable anywhere else.
