Nairobi National Museum: Kenya's Cultural & Natural Heritage Guide

The Nairobi National Museum is Kenya's most important cultural institution, a comprehensive museum of natural history, ethnography, and visual art that provides an invaluable introduction to the extraordinary diversity of Kenyan cultures, ecosystems, and geological history for visitors arriving in Nairobi for the first time. Located in a gracious colonial building surrounded by snake park and botanical garden, the museum is one of the finest natural history museums in sub-Saharan Africa.

The museum's collection of ethnographic material documenting the cultures, traditions, and material heritage of Kenya's 42 officially recognised ethnic groups is outstanding — the traditional costumes, agricultural tools, musical instruments, and ceremonial objects on display represent communities from the Maasai and Samburu of the savannahs to the Luo of Lake Victoria and the Mijikenda of the coast, offering a breadth of cultural documentation that is impossible to find concentrated anywhere else in the country.

The natural history galleries cover Kenya's remarkable geological past — including hominid fossils discovered at Lake Turkana that have been central to understanding human evolution — alongside exceptional displays of East African wildlife dioramas, bird collections, and marine specimens. The adjacent snake park houses over 200 species of East African reptiles and amphibians in enclosures that allow remarkably close observation. A full visit requires at least three hours to do justice to the collection, making it an excellent choice for a Nairobi morning before an afternoon drive into Nairobi National Park.
