Nairobi National Park: Safari Within the City Limits

Nairobi National Park is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles on earth — a 117km² protected wilderness beginning just 7km from Kenya's capital city centre, where lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, and 400 species of birds roam freely against a backdrop of the Nairobi city skyline. The contrast is surreal and unforgettable: a cheetah stalking prey in tall savanna grass with office towers and aircraft contrails visible in the distance. The park protects Kenya's last significant black rhino population — approximately 50 individuals — making rhino sightings here among the most accessible in Africa. Giraffes graze at the Giraffe Centre on the park's boundary (visitor experience where Rothschild's giraffes take pellets from your hand at eye level). The park operates daily 6am–7pm; self-drive is permitted for those with their own vehicle; tours from Nairobi city centre start from $45. The Nairobi Animal Orphanage within the park cares for rescued wildlife. Masai Mara (5 hours drive) and Amboseli (4 hours) are feasible from Nairobi for overnight safaris.
