Nairobi Tech Scene: Silicon Savannah & Africa's Most Exciting Startup Hub

Nairobi has earned the name Silicon Savannah through a combination of mobile innovation, favorable demographics, and a startup ecosystem that has produced world-changing companies. M-Pesa, the mobile money platform launched by Safaricom in 2007, processed its first transaction in Nairobi and went on to transform financial services across the developing world: today more money flows through M-Pesa in Kenya than through the formal banking system. That single innovation established Nairobi's credibility as a place where technology solutions for African problems are built, tested, and scaled.

The tech geography of Nairobi centres on a few key hubs. iHub, established in 2010 as East Africa's first technology innovation hub, catalyzed a generation of Kenyan entrepreneurs and remains an active co-working and community space. Nairobi Garage on Ngong Road is the most established co-working space for tech companies and startups. The Westlands and Kilimani business districts have the highest concentration of tech offices; Karen and Karen Hardy host some of the larger tech campuses.

The sector is notably mobile-first and financial technology-heavy: Kenyan fintech companies including Cellulant, Lipa Na M-Pesa, and Branch have raised significant international capital. Health tech, agtech (connecting farmers to markets via mobile), and logistics technology are the other dominant verticals. The government's Konza Techno City project — a new technology city being built 60km south of Nairobi — represents the official vision for long-term tech sector growth.

For visitors interested in the ecosystem: iHub runs open days, Nairobi Garage offers day passes, and Startup Grind Nairobi hosts monthly events. The Nairobi Innovation Week in August is the largest annual gathering of the tech community.
