Ngong Hills Hike from Nairobi: Kenya's Best Urban Trekking Day Trip
The Ngong Hills rise dramatically 30 kilometres southwest of Nairobi, offering the city's most rewarding day hike with panoramic views spanning the Rift Valley escarpment, Nairobi's skyline, and on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro's distant snowcap. The main ridge trail runs 11 kilometres across four distinct peaks, ranging from 2,400 to 2,460 metres above sea level. The name 'Ngong' comes from the Maasai word for 'knuckles' — the hills' silhouette resembles a giant's raised fist against the sky. Start at the KWS gate near Ngong town (a 1-hour matatu ride from CBD), register, and hire a mandatory KWS ranger guide for the trail. The hills support buffalo, zebra, and various antelope. Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa, was buried at the Ngong Hills — her grave is a short detour from the trail. Pack a picnic, bring layers, and go on a clear morning for maximum views. This is Nairobi's finest accessible hike.
